Fitting the Right Hand Fuel Tank

The tank stand (fits on the boot floor adjacent to the rear wheel arch) is an optional item. Although the original Cooper ‘S’ cars used this, it is not strictly necessary to fit this and in reality it makes the job easier if not fitted.

We suggest that you continue fitting the tank without the tank stand until you are entirely happy with the positioning of your tank and the tank neck in relation to the rear quarter panel. Before trial fitting the tank you will need to fit the long tank strap to the rear bulkhead mounting. Leave this loose until the final fitting.

The short tank strap can be fitted to the boot floor by means of a rawl nut (captive nut) or by simply using a nut and bolt though the boot floor, but be very careful with the positioning if you are going to adopt the latter method of fixing. There is a closed box section behind the rear valance panel which extends to some six inches or so from the side of the car. Do not drill in to this box section area otherwise you will find it extremely difficult to fit the nut on to the bolt…!

If you are not going to use the tank stand, please ensure the tank rests on some sort of rubber seating to protect the boot floor.

Having carried out the trial fitting, the tank neck seal can be placed in the 70mm hole (place a little grease or washing-up liquid inside the seal so that the tank neck will slide into it without pushing the seal out of the hole). You can now connect the two tank straps and tighten accordingly. Do not over tighten, the tank should be firmly held in place, but not to the point where the straps are trying to tear themselves out of the body!

Finally, fit the breather pipe exiting it through the boot floor, again avoiding the rear valance box section. Ensure the breather pipe is a snug fit in the boot floor.
